  • ESPON Workshop at the Open Days 2011

Regional and Local Economies in a Changing Global Context
    Performance Monitoring and Territorial Indicators

    Brussels, 13 October 2011, 11h15 – 13h00

od2011_v_grey06 July 2011 - ESPON in cooperation with the European Commission DG Regio organises the Workshop “Regional and Local Economies in a Changing Global Context. Performance Monitoring and Territorial Indicators” at the Open Days 2011 - European Week of Regions and Cities.

The workshop will address, in two slots, important project achievements related to EU competitiveness, and the contribution of regions and cities to the ‘Europe 2020’ strategy opting for intelligent, sustainable and inclusive growth. Globalisation is accelerating and European competitiveness is increasingly connected to world dynamics. Climate change is a major territorial challenge confronting Europe and the entire planet. Regions and cities have to relate stronger and understand better this world context in their future development.

The first slot will discuss new results from applied research on the territorial impact and effects of globalization (ESPON TIGER) and climate change (ESPON CLIMATE). Supporting tools focusing on European and global challenges and their regional consequences are in demand and development. In this work, monitoring performance and operational territorial indicators are crucial for policy makers and practitioners to measure progress, development opportunities and challenges for policy development.

The second slot, which will discuss progress made in monitoring territorial performance (ESPON TPM) and in defining territorial indicators (ESPON INTERCO), will be useful for policy makers involved in territorial development and cohesion.
