1) In 2011, 504 million people lived in the European neighbourhood countries, while 520 million people lived in the EU 27 (plus Croatia), Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

2) A striking demographic decline is present in almost all the Balkans and Eastern European neighbour countries from 2000-2010.

3) In Turkey, considerable demographic changes are taking place and the country shows regions growing in population and others shrinking. The other Mediterranean neighbour countries experience the same demographic transition but with lesser demographic regional disparities.
