ESPON workshop at Open Days 2008

The workshop “ESPON 2013 Programme: Europe in the World, New Territorial Evidence and Stakeholder Involvement” took place at the OPEN DAYS 2008. This is the European Week of Regions and Cities organised by the Committee of the Regions and the European Commission's Regional Policy Directorate-General.

The first part of the workshop dealt with “New Projects and Stakeholder Involvement – Perspectives of the ESPON 2013 Programme” and “Research Demand from the EC Green Paper on Territorial Cohesion”. In this part Peter Mehlbye, director of ESPON Coordination Unit outlined the perspectives of the ESPON 2013 Programme and gave an interesting overview of new applied research projects and on the demand from stakeholders at local and regional levels for Targeted Analysis.

Lewis Dijkstra, from the European Commission - DG Regio, focused on the Green Paper on Territorial Cohesion, which the European Commission adopted on 6 October 2008. The document is for debate aiming at achieving a better and shared understanding of territorial cohesion and its implications for the future of the EU's regional policy. The analytical staff working document related to Green Paper had been inspired by results from ESPON.

The second part of the workshop provided new ESPON evidence on Territorial Trends related to (1) population and migration, (2) potential accessibility as well as (3) a presentation of the ESPON report “Europe in the World”. Prof. Mats Johansson mapped new ESPON evidence on territorial trends for demographic development and migration in Europe. Klaus Spiekermann outlined latest ESPON evidence on the potential accessibility of regions and cities in Europe, particular in terms of air connections. Prof. Pierre Beckouche presented as co-author the first findings on Europe in the World, the latest comprehensive product of ESPON. The report delivers statistical and cartographic evidence that can contribute to the understanding of the territorial dimension of the accelerating globalization.
