EU-level consultation on the ESPON 2020 Cooperation Programme

Brussels 27 March 2014

2012.05.10_Espon_infoday-025ESPON invited for an EU-level consultation on the ESPON 2020 Cooperation Programme which took place on 27 March 2014 at the Permanent Representation of Luxembourg to the EU.

The consultation aimed at gathering the views of EU level stakeholders on the development of the ESPON 2020 Cooperation Programme.

At the event progress on the renewal of ESPON, content of the new programme and organisational structure were presented.

Particular important questions addressed to the audience were the following:

a) From your policy perspective, what are the themes that Europe needs more territorial evidence on and which should be addressed by ESPON 2020 in pan-European applied research?

b) Knowledge transfer and use of ESPON evidence by national, regional and local authorities as well as other ESIF programmes is an important programme objective. Do you have views on themes and the proposed organisation of the involvement of stakeholders in targeted analysis provided by ESPON 2020?

c) The ESPON toolbox for analyses includes several tools, such as the ESPON database, mapping tools, TIA quick scan and urban benchmarking tool. What would you from your policy perspective find useful in 2014-2020 in terms of support by ESPON tools?

d) Outreach and communication of European territorial evidence to an increased number of users is another objective. Do you have advice on how ESPON 2020 should develop an outreach strategy and could your organisation foresee being involved in transmitting ESPON findings to a wider audience?

Altogether 8 European stakeholder organisations attended the event, including the Committee of the Regions, EUROCITIES, EUROMONTANA, CPMR, EUKN and MOT as well as Brussels representatives for Irish regions and the region of Lombardy. Their contributions, opinions and idea will be fed into the finalisation of the programme document.
