Poster "Growth in Cities and Surrounding Regions"

09 Growth in Cities and Surrounding RegionsKey Messages

1) On average, disparities between cities and their hinterland increased 1995-2004 through higher GDP growth in many cities compared to their hinterlands.

2) Increasing disparities indicate a process of metropolitanisation.

3) Surrounding areas in Eastern European are often not fully benefitting from GDP growth in the cities, partly due to weaknesses in accessibility.

4) City hinterlands in the Central part of Europe, Ireland and Portugal register stronger GDP growth than the cities.
