The ESPON Quality of Life (QoL) in the Alpine Area study has released groundbreaking insights aimed at enhancing the understanding of quality of life (QoL) dynamics in the Alpine area. The new territorial evidence for the Alpine area was obtained by implementing and enhancing the Territorial Quality of Life Accounting methodology, initially developed by the ESPON QoL project, including a system of indicators to measure the quality of life in a territory, tested in different types of regions – urban, rural, cross-border – in Europe.

In addition, Living labs were conducted in Canton Ticino (Switzerland), Trento (Italy), Koroška region (Slovenia), and Unterkärnten (Austria) which engaged stakeholders and citizens' focus groups to identify QoL priorities and recommend strategic indicators. The study's composite index approach aggregated proxy indicators for 22 QoL sub-domains, unveiling a nuanced understanding of QoL variations within the Alpine region. Moreover, the study proposed a three-fold strategy including creating territorial indicators, designing a local scale application of the TQoL methodology, and analyzing QoL needs of urban and rural residents. This comprehensive approach offers valuable insights for policymakers and planners in addressing QoL challenges and opportunities in the Alpine region.
