The REC Pilot Project in Culatra is an island-based initiative in the Algarve region of Portugal, managed by the resident cooperative, C-COOP. Initiated in 2023 under the broader Culatra 2030 initiative, the project is characterised by its explicit focus on engendering environmental benefits, aiming for energy resilience, sustainability, and independence through solar PV, battery storage, and a smart grid. The REC serves as a test bed to define energy sharing schemes and participatory economic models. Its core achievement includes securing a constant and reliable electricity supply while contributing to the alleviation of energy poverty on the island.
